Useful Information About Non Lethal Conflict Resolution Methods

By Marissa Velazquez

When conflicts arise, some warring parties might decide to solve their disputes while others may stay like that and hold grudges. Those who seek to resolve the conflict, seek out a working settlement for both parties. Conflict resolution can go two ways either peaceful or violent depending on the nature, type and magnitude of the dispute as well as level of understanding of parties. Peaceful resolution is always referred to as non lethal conflict resolution method.

Non lethal methods otherwise known as non violent or peaceful ways encourage people to solve a disagreement amicably. An example is negotiation method and true to its name, the warring factions dialogue the way forward to their problem. This method is applicable to people with great understanding of each other, who can talk face to face calmly and as mature people to solve the dispute.

Another non lethal method of solving a problem is through mediation. When using this method, there has to be a third neutral known as a mediator helping the conflicting parties solve their conflict. The mediator after listening to issues of both parties comes up with an intervention between the warring individuals helping to come at a settlement, compromise or reconciliation.

The other way of peacefully solving a disagreement is litigation. This method involves one party taking another to a court of law to have their problem solved by a judge. Both parties can decide to represent themselves or hire an attorney for legal guidance. The judge listens to the case carefully and then in the end makes a decision that both individuals have to abide to.

Arbitration is the other way to resolve a dispute calmly. Just like mediation, this method does involve a third party known as an arbitrator who should be neutral and help the parties solve their dispute. The disputing individuals both agree on a common arbitrator whom they are both aware is neutral. An informal court is established by the arbitrator who then listens to both sides and decides on a settlement that will be agreed by both the disputing individuals.

Religious action is also a method used to solve problems among people peacefully. This is especially for people who practice the same religion. A religious leader is therefore called upon to listen to the issues of both parties and in the most neutral way basing his facts to what the religion would want both parties to do, decide on the most amicable solution for the individuals.

Finally, the last method is problem solving workshop. When using this method, there has to be a facilitator and the workshop set at a particular place. The purpose of the workshop is to help persons come to a settlement cordially. The warring parties are always advised to participate during the discussion in order to iron out their differences. With the help of the facilitators, conflicting persons are able to resolve their disagreement.

From the above information, people learn of the various non lethal conflict resolution methods of settling disputes. But all these methods are only applicable when settling social disagreements between two people. There are however other non violent ways to solve political disagreements between states such as arms inspection, international agreements among other ways.
