If you have a child that is gifted in some area, then his/her needs may not be represented best by the normal systems. You may require the help of an advocate for special education to help address the exceptional needs of the kid. These professionals act as the main link between these children and their parents and teachers. A good expert should meet the criteria below.

An individual should be trained in advocacy for special education. This does not mean that one has to be a lawyer, but simply that they must meet minimum training requirements. Some advocates work closely with attorneys, while others offer their services independently. Because systems and laws change regularly, a good professional should engage in continued learning through attending conferences and workshops.

Consider the experience the expert has. Currently, there is no certification authority in place to certify advocates. Therefore, you have to consider the quality of training and experience one has attained. This will ensure that they have the right knowledge and skills to handle various disabilities, evaluations, IEPs and other educational negotiations. They will also be able to offer quality behavioral supports and discipline, fact investigations, document management, and other areas.

Consider the ability to facilitate the IEP process. A good professional should assist special-needs kids and their families with Individualized Education Program meetings or eligibility, discipline matters, administrative hearings and mediation. Therefore, they should be a role model to both the child and the parents. Their goal should be to get better school services by using their skills.

Consider the rapport between the advocate and the child. The level of relationship between the professional, family members and the child will contribute to the success of the process significantly. The expert should refer to peer-reviewed and research-based materials when giving recommendations. At no time should they give their individual opinions.

The main goal is to reduce barriers that exist between schools and parents. Therefore, one needs to understand how the situation affects the learning process of the child. They should also create an environment that makes it possible for parents to understand the stages involved in the IEP Team process.

Advocacy requires good listening skills. When you first meet, check if they are listening to what you are telling them. One should also ask for clarifications so that there is no misunderstanding. Someone who does not listening may not represent the needs of the child because they may not even know those requirements.

Look at the negotiation skills. Advocacy requires careful planning and approach so that conflict can be reduced between the two parties. Negotiation is a very essential art in IEP meetings, as it will ensure both parties reach a compromise.

The individual must understand special and general education law. These two laws have a special interrelationship that must be utilized in any court process. One should also have a good grasp of unrelated laws such as Department of Agriculture regulations.

Understand the proposed fee agreement with the advocate for special education. Most advocates work with none governmental organizations that may or may not offer free services. In case you have to pay for the services they are offering, then ensure that you discuss the fees in advance. However, the charges are always subsidized in most cases.
